Oz, The Great and Powerful
This prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz, movie is a masterpiece. Beautifully interpreted from the whimsical inspiration of L. Frank Baum, the movie's wonderful vintage, steam punk vision is successful with the larger-than-life fantastical set designs and costumes. Although there is no Dorothy, Scarecrow, or Tinman, elements of the beginning conceptions of the characters are evident throughout the film. The storyline follows how the Wizard of Oz came to be, and it gives clues of foreshadowing the original. The characters are believable and you fall in love with them, just as in the original. Hindley, the comical bell-hop monkey provides the perfect amount of clean humor. China Girl, while she appears delicate and fragile, surprises with a witty, sarcastic, humor and dynamic attitude. Mila Kunis (Theodora), Rachel Weisz (Evanora), and Michelle Williams (Glinda), are the three Witches of Oz and play them incredibly! The Oz, James Franco, is committed to his role throughout the movie, and while he plays a cunning, but well-meaning Carnival Magician, a thread of goodness is revealed.
As a whole the movie has won me over and it is definitely one I would buy and watch as often as I do the classic!
I give Oz, The Great and Powerful:
